With Ceramics Popular As Ever, Local Artists Host Crawl With Pottery Studios Around Chicago

CHICAGO — Chicago has long had a thriving arts scene, but in recent years, its ceramics community has experienced a renaissance.

More people are taking up pottery as a hobby and pursuing it as a career, and young potters are opening up their own studios, local artists say. Now, Chicagoans can explore and learn more about pottery with a Ceramics Crawl 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Learn more about the Ceramics Crawl here.

Laura Williams, who studied clay at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and has taught pottery classes at Chicago studios for nearly a decade, said Chicago’s pottery scene is the most vibrant she’s encountered. She sees the city as a hub for pottery in the same way it is for theater and music.

“I moved a lot of different places, and I fell in love with Chicago because of how communal the city is and the people that are doing clay and painting and textiles and making in general,” said Williams, 31, who teaches at The Digs Chicago and Lillstreet. “It’s like this really supportive and magical ecosystem.” Read More Here.
